Whims and fancies ... and decisions

“It is as chaotic at the top” – NR

_______________________

Often, as a person aspiring to reach at the top, we believe that the persons at the top (or even at a higher level in organizational hierarchy) are completely rational in their decision making, influenced by nothing but objective facts and ground realities. We believe that he cannot ignore various factors, various stakeholders and various consequences in decision making. (Dilbert fans may not believe it though!)However, seemingly ‘fundoo’ human is ultimately a victim this internal chaos and lack of clarity and the decision he takes, which may not even be good is often which is hailed as excellent because of his ‘fundoo’ brand image.

Usually the decision making at the top level are often affected by personal biases, which are usually partly uninformed ones and whims and fancies of the persons at the top, and these are factors what influence the decision more than any facts and figures. It is more about what they ‘feel’ should be done, rather than what they ‘think’ should be done. These are much more relevant in cases where stakes are relatively higher, and usually increase with level of responsibility. For example managing the nation, which depends a lot about what the politician feels is right, and not necessarily what benefits the people. Or often in mythologies we have heard rishis and munis and even god(s)getting angry (probably due to ego hassles!) and unleashing destruction without thinking of consequences.

What does the junta ‘feel’ about it?

Rathi...
This my third attempt to post a comment here, hope nobody disturbs now.....
A very useful observation i must say.
Its not only at top level but at all levels that decision making is highly infected with personal biases.
But one difference i would like to point out..
Take the case of corporates and Governments. While in case of former since the stakes of people at the helm are very high they often go by what they 'think' should be done and not what they 'Feel' should be done and hence that translates into efficient private organizations.
But while take the case of governments, since personal stakes are almost negligible for bureaucrats they go by what they 'Feel' is right and results into disastrous mismanagement.

At one level its the personal stake that is driving the decision making at all levels.

Yeah ... personal interests and answers of questions like "How I shall benefit from this?" is often a great motivator.

And again, the answer to this is often of the kind how they 'feel' that this action would benefit them!

Hmm...
I think we have mixed up 'feel' and 'think' definitions. Anyways we shall wait till 'sirji' comes up with something.
an important info : i am hibernating for two weeks. Going off to "Assam-ki-bodo-infected-wadiyan". When i return i shall again be posting from IIT.

Hmmm ... Maybe we have mixed two definitions a bit.
OK. Let me clarify what I mean by 'feel' in above -

The distinction I wanted to make was that in context of this post 'feel' is the decision making made in a somewhat uninformed way, using personal biases, whims and fancies.

It is NOT the 'feel' that usually comes partly mixed with rational thinking and judgment bases upon facts, and uses some amount of intuition. There is quite a bit delineating intuition with biases and whims!

Hmm....
Then my guess is 'think' refers to informed decision taking.

In that case my use of 'think' for corporates was quiet inappropriate. Its a very strong work to be used here. For simple reason that no decision making/taking process can be totally rational. Its has to be a mix of rational + emotional/personal thinking..

I'm afraid I have been completely Dilbertized. Or should I say, 'PHB'ised - coz my mind is totally blank!
